Behind Every Successful Woman is a... Woman

In honor of Women’s History Month, we want to celebrate a few of the women who have played an integral role in the development of modern-day health, wellness, and beauty.  After all, ladies... . don’t you think they deserve recognition???
Read on to learn about the important contributions of these very smart, talented women.

Mary Kay Ash
We all know who this business-savvy lady is!  The founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics, she provided thousands of women the opportunity to achieve personal and financial success through the sales of her famous cosmetics line.  And, hey, some of these aspiring entrepreneurs even got a pink Cadi out of it.  Not a bad gig!

Martha Matilda Harper
Love getting your hair shampooed at the salon as you lay back and relax?  You can thank this business visionary for that.  Martha Matilda Harper discovered retail franchising in the late 1800s and built a network of more than 500 hair salons, owned by women she trained. And, yep...she invented the reclining shampoo chair we love so much!

Clara Barton
Clara Barton was a schoolteacher turned nurse during the Civil War. During a visit to Europe, she worked with a relief organization known as the International Red Cross. Upon her arrival back in the states, she petitioned for an American branch. The American Red Cross was founded in 1881, and Barton served as its first president.  Could you imagine life today without the Red Cross?  Neither can we.

These next two ladies really hit the nail on the head as far as daily provisions with these inventions:

Josephine Cochrane
One thing most women can agree on... we hate washing dishes!  Lucky for us, Josephine Cochrane concocted the first mechanical dishwasher in 1886 and presented it at the 1893 World's Fair.  We simply can’t come up with enough ways to thank her!

Caresse Crosby
We have mixed reactions on this one... you’ll have to decide for yourself.  Caresse Crosby is the renowned inventor of the first modern bra, which was patented in 1914. Friend or foe... . what do you think?

While these examples do not even scratch the surface of the many contributions of women in history, they certainly exemplify the power of a strong woman who is not afraid to aspire to be all that she can be.

Mother Theresa sums it up best:
“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”

These ladies most definitely cast their stone!

Attention, all women!

Stressed Out??

Stress... we all experience it. Sometimes stress can be a good thing, motivating you to perform well at that big meeting or during that tennis match. But many times — like when you're stuck in traffic, or overloaded at work— it's a very negative thing. Experiencing stress over a long period of time can become a problem — unless you stop it in its tracks.

Sooo... . what to do???  You need to get a handle on stress before it overpowers you.

Try these handy tips to manage stress and reveal a much happier YOU:

Shorten that to-do list
Focus on 1-3 important tasks each day so as not to get overwhelmed. Remember the old adage, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Plan and prioritize.

Delegate
To effectively shorten that to-do list, you must learn to delegate.  You don’t have to do everything yourself. If possible, delegate and let someone else help you!

Weekends were made for fun!
Finding a balance between work and rest is crucial for eliminating stress.  On the weekend, stay away from anything work-related. No emails. No phone calls. Nope... not even a text or two.  None!!  Relax.  Enjoy.  It will all be waiting for you bright and early Monday morning.

Keep your diet in check.
A healthy you is a happy you! Eating well is about being healthy. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats is essential for good health.  It’s a lifestyle. When we put healthy food inside of us, we feel better and we look better.  Go ahead and commit to being healthy!

Sweat it out.
You know how great you feel after a brisk walk or a spin class?  That’s because you have released a whole bunch of stress and you’re feeling carefree and at ease.  You even sleep better.  Choose an activity you enjoy doing and get moving.  Give it a week... maybe two.   We are confident your stress levels will be significantly reduced.

Get massaged!
A visit to Spa Essence Retreat is the perfect way to relax and get rid of all that extra stress.  Reserve a Signature Massage and Aromatherapy Enhancement and we promise that you will leave feeling completely relaxed without a worry in the world!

Listen to yourself.
We tend to ignore the warning signs our bodies are giving us.  Big mistake! When you start to feel irritable, exhausted, and overwhelmed... . STOP! Listen to your body and do what it is begging you to do.  Relax, re-evaluate, and start over.  Running into a brick wall or getting burned out is not the solution. Be kind to yourself and prioritize your health.

Ask A Therapist

Q. How can I obtain a “safe” tan?  And how do I choose the appropriate sunblock for my sensitive skin?

A. There is no way to obtain a safe tan. However, there are steps you can take to reduce sun damage and protect your skin while trying to get that sun-kissed glow.

First of all, hydrated skin is less likely to burn and more likely to tan so keep up your water intake.

When you go outside, you will need to use about a shot glass full of sunscreen no lower than 20 SPF and apply liberally every two hours and immediately after you enter the water.

If you choose to use a tanning oil, choose one no lower than 15 SPF and apply liberally and repeatedly for desired result.
